Shophouse is new, but our roots are deep
Shophouse is the culmination of years of experience in various facets. First envisioned as the West Kootenay House Hostel, and then morphed into and launched as ‘Seed of Sound’ in 2010, it evolved into event production before undergoing the current transformation. This change was sparked by a renewed inspiration and our experience hosting international travellers seeking work and cultural exchanges, leading to a focus on teaching creative skills and enjoying the outdoors.
Our inspiration was drawn not only from British Columbia’s rugged wilderness and oceanic landscapes, but also from the style of guesthouses and tourism operators in Southeast Asia. These establishments offer more than just lodging; they provide immersive experiences and personal connections with their culture. Guests often find themselves learning from their hosts, embarking on micro-tours with locals, hopping onto the owner’s truck for a special journey, or assisting with family chores. These activities lead to unique, highly praised, and memorable experiences.
At Shophouse, we prefer tours that are less impactful and costly, slightly more rugged yet mellower, allowing us to blend into our surroundings and minimize disturbance. This approach maintains our welcome in ecologically sensitive areas. Shophouse recognizes that some visitors seek not only entertainment but also opportunities to contribute. Welcome to Shophouse!
